Tina Allen is dedicated to raising the consciousness of people around the world. She articulates expressively with warmth and humor, the importance of preserving the African American culture and the potential for greater contributions by future generations. In the tradition of the Harlem Renaissance, this classically trained sculptor has dedicated her growing body of work to preserving the African American contribution to American life in bronze. Ms. Allen's historic representational works are among the largest depictions of African Americans in the world. Ms. Allen is based in Los Angeles.
Ms. Allen has recently established The Monumental Foundation a 501(c) 3 Charitable Trust to help insure that significant historic personalities will be remembered and lasting tributes will be put together in a timely manner. Chief among the projects anticipated include; Harriet Tubman for Leimert Park, Los Angeles, CA., Sammy Davis, Jr. for Las Vegas, NV., Dorothy Dandridge for Culver City, CA., Fanny Lou Hammer for Mississippi and a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monumental bust.
Ms. Allen is writing a book about her life and work. This new publication will focus on the many concepts of "BEAUTY" in the African Diaspora and our need to control the visual landscape for our community. Now more than ever we need to create a visual agenda that supports and feeds our community's growing potential. The book also covers the many interesting people and challenging adventures encountered while developing a historic body of work. Sculptural art historically has been a male dominated field, Ms. Allen discusses the many ways she overcame this perception to carve out a space for herself.
Ms. Allen has been a board member and active participant in ICAAAR. The International Center for Asian and African American Relations. She has coordinated cross-cultural art shows in the U.S. and Japan. Additionally, she has worked on art projects involving Japanese children creating work for her Peace Park. Video available.
Plans are underway for a mid-career retrospective in London, England in 2003.
